Aromatherapy and other complimentary treatments for animals...
Although this page is primarily about aromatherapy oils and their uses in complimentary animal medicine, I feel it is worth mentioning also massage and Dr. Bach's flower remedies. I think you will have great success in using these, and if you have not tried alternative treatments on your animals previously I think you will be very pleased indeed with the response. However as always I must stress that these are in no way a replacement for veterinary consultation. Use these suggestions responsibly and in conjunction with professional advice, and remember to give thanks in all things.
Animal Aromatherapy Suggestions...
Essential oils have been used since Biblical times and beyond to successfully treat many ailments. Their success has been documented in animal use also from tiny kittens to huge Shire horses. Animals often respond better to aromatherapy and other alternative treatment than humans because they have not learned to be skeptical.

For small animals [small dogs, cats, ferrets] use 3 - 4 drops in an appropriate carrier oil per application, for medium sized animals [medium sized dogs, small goats, pot bellied pigs] apply 7 - 8 drops in an appropriate carrier, and for large animals [giant dogs, small horses] use 10 - 12 drops in an appropriate carrier. If you are treating larger horses, chimpanzees or elephants please adjust the doseage accordingly! I do not recommend using the oils neat, and at no time should oils known as Phenols be used on any members of the cat family.

For animals not having hooves [including humans!], oils can be applied to the pads of the feet for quick absorption. For those with hooves, apply the oils along the spine and massage them into the skin.

Dr. Bach's Flower Remedies
While I am not a practitioner of Dr. Bach's Flower Remedies, I do highly recommend them. There are many flower remedies on the market at the moment but I trust Dr. Bach because that is the one with which I am familiar. I always have the 'rescue remedy' to hand, in both the tincture and the ointment. It is invaluable, and I highly recommend anyone starting to use homeopathic or alternative treatments on their animals [or themselves] to seek out and invest in the 'rescue remedy'. Place the tincture on the tongue according to instructions, and use the ointment as a salve, again according to instructions. Should you not be able to find it in your local health food store, search the web for 'Dr. Bach's Flower Remedies', or email me and I'll see if I can help.

Theraputic Massage...
As humans we enjoy being touched and carressed, and so do our animals. It is mutually gratifying to stroke a purring kitten or scratch the ears in front of a wagging tail. We know the benefits of a full massage, how good it is for us and how good it makes us feel. I believe it is the same for our animals. Massage can relax knotted muscles, ease tension and aid relaxation, and promote calmness and well being. The benefits of massage are many, and I encourage you to find out more of your animal's muscular and skeletal system, so that the two of you may share in this give and take of healing, calming energies. There are a couple of good 'study at home' courses available; if you cannot find them, email me and I will be happy to forward the details to you.
